Chapter 12

Greg didn’t have to tell me to stay home after we finished lunch. He walked me to our door, gave Emma a hug, and kissed me. Lunch had been quiet, with both of us lost in our own thoughts. Greg pulled me into a hug.

“Look, it might just be someone who worked for Max and thought the project had been greenlighted. Who turns down an offer like you got? Probably not very many people.” He put a finger under my chin and met my gaze. “It’s going to be all right. Just let me do my job.”

“Okay, Alpha Male Hero Character. Go save the world and my house. Emma and I will just stay here and play damsels in distress.” I glanced toward the kitchen. “I’m pretty sure I have some ice cream to keep me company until you get home.”

“I’ll be home early. If I need to, I’ll bring work home and camp out in my office. I don’t feel comfortable leaving you alone out here.”

“Actually, with Esmeralda popping in most afternoons to bring me food, I’m not feeling all that alone this week.” I leaned on the doorway and glanced over at our neighbor’s house. She must have still been at the station because her car wasn’t in her driveway. “And Toby’s around sleeping at times.”

“Well, I’m going to be here more until we get this murder solved. I really didn’t like the idea of some guy talking about the house selling to random people in town. If it had been an outsider, they might think you had money just sitting around. Maybe we should get more of a security system.” He started to step inside to evaluate the house again, but I put a hand on his chest.

“Go to work. We’ll be fine. You know Emma won’t let anyone in the house I don’t want here. And I know how to use a cell phone to call for help.”

He kissed me again. “Just keep it charged this time.”

I held up my phone so he could see the battery. “I’m good. See you tonight. Should I pull out something?”

“Yeah, surprise me.” He waved and hurried down the stairs. I watched him pull out of the driveway, then closed and locked the door. Emma and I had just settled down on the couch with a cold soda and one of the books I’d brought home when a knock sounded at my door.

I went and let the door swing open, thinking it was Greg. “What did you forget?”

Esmeralda stood at the door with a bag in her hands. “I don’t think I forgot anything. I brought you the fixings for chicken fajitas. I thought it might be fun to cook for a change.”

I folded my arms. “What’s going on? Why do you keep bringing us food?”

“I feel bad that the two of you aren’t getting much time together. You’ve just gotten engaged and now Greg’s off working a case at all hours.” She swung the bag. “Take it. I’m not spelling you or anything like that.
